Herculaneum Ins. Or. II.5. Workshop, dye-shop, officina tinctoria.
Excavated 1932-1941.
According to Maiuri, this workshop, perhaps a dye-works with a furnace made by removing the bottom from a dolium and cementing it to a stove.
There is a rear-room, above which is a mezzanine and an upper floor.

Guidobaldi wrote that this was a tintoria with dwelling on the upper floor.

According to Wallace-Hadrill, the taberna at number 5 is a dye-shop, officina tinctoria, with a great dolium or storage jar walled into position for the dye-vat, and a latrine in the corner.

The holes for the support beams and the part of the floor of the mezzanine can be seen against the east wall.
Above this, at the very top of the rear east wall are holes for support beams for an upper floor.

Camardo and Notomista wrote that placed inside the glass fronted recess with a wooden shelf were originally finds from the excavation.
In the original list were included – glass, bronze, iron and ceramic objects, whereas today there are some marble finds.
